The first thing you read in Joe’s bio is that he is the president of Hypnotic Marketing Inc, an internet marketing consulting firm. Bottom line, a consulting firm tells you how bad your business sucks and why. Good ones will tell you how to fix it.

He can fix you and show you how to sell yourself as someone who can fix the selves of others. Life coach is the new buzz word. Personal life consulting. Telling people how bad their life sucks and that you can fix it. Help me help you.

Sounds like he’s selling salvation.

But in a passage from The Key, Joe himself writes,
Many of the teachers in The Secret create products and services to help you achieve your goals. When your mind-set is open, you thank them for their services. When your mind-set is closed, you say they are just “selling.”

Well, are they selling or serving?

It’s both and its neither. It depends on your beliefs. It depends on your threshold of deservingness. If you think they are taking advantage of you, you call it selling (because you think selling is bad). If you think they are helping you, you call it serving (because you know serving is good).

Overall, it is a decent read. If you haven’t been introduced or don’t fully understand the basic law of attraction philosophy I suggest you start with The Secret instead; it is a better jumping off point than The Key.

The downfall is that it is feels like only half a book. The latter portion consists of excerpts from transcripts of Joe’s Miracle Coaching teleseminars. Which has a choppy read and gives the impression that you tuned in late to the program.

But here comes the big sell! The last chapters are about the Miracle Coaching program. It is clumsy and the mark of a truly poor editor. Its like watching Star Wars only to have George Lucas substitute a 20 minute infomercial for the ending Death Star battle. The book has no conclusion, no wrap up. They just pasted on the advertising at the end because they didn’t have a strong closing chapter.

Blogging about Star Wars Comic rocks my body!

Welcome to the bloggosphere! Random backlinks are good, but relevant, niche-related backlinks are much better. A rising tide raises all ships. Like Led Zeppelin says, “ramble on” because you have to have content in your blog posts; content according to their letter spacing algorithm to try to insure that it is written by a human being with naturally flowing writing, versus computer created, randomly generated text.

But now they have software that will take a single written document and rearrange the sentence structure so all the information is the same for grabbing keywords with SEO but its worded differently to avoid being dinged for duplicate content.

So instead of Darth Vader being mentioned here, he might be switched out with Star Wars above to still snag the google spiders and search engine terminators but usually this stuff is still completely gobbledygooked as to flow naturally but nonsensically.

Or to be nonsensically natural.

Or to be nonsensical naturally.

Or not to be at all, thus to not exist. Which none of it does since the internet is simply an electronic dream created by sleeping machines.

Ones. Zeros. Ones. Zeros. Ones. Zeros.

So I’m creating a circle jerk of blogs to link to one another to justify their own existence. It’s like Schroedinger’s Cat, it exists and does not exist at the same time, until it one gets indexed by Google, thus justifying its existence, with the outbound links justifying the other blogs’ existences. Thus they all become real and are no longer an internet dream but gain page rank, which is how Google rates their version of reality.

Which is unfortunately how the internet rates reality.

Non virtual. Non virtuous.

Remember, the higher your word count, the higher your content, thus the realer your blog or site is. Otherwise, the spiders will say, “You’re not real.”

Like Judd Nelson said in Breakfast Club, “I might as well not even exist. . .” But Judd’s character probable has an alright PR rating, especially with all the slackers and stoners surfing the internet when they should working or doing homework. And with all the nostalgic, older, I-miss-the-80’s crowd. And every time TBS reruns it all weekend long.

Is your blog a slacker?

Well, pump it up! Give it some SEO steroids. Artificially swell your internet popularity in the search engines by randomly promoting yourself with circular logic. I’m not stopping until my page has totally “attacked my abs” of the internet famous or “crushed the lat machine” of social networking.

Which means I want to hit at least a 500 word count which includes anchor text and keywords relevant to my over topic, that way--I exist.

That seems rather egocentric, doesn’t it? A blog that never got enough attention when it was just a baby. Crying out to the (virtual) world, “Notice me!”

So Robert Plant’s philosophy will continue to guide this post while Darth Vader spins me right round baby right round like a Death Star baby, round, round.

Then I will wordspin this post I slap it up on my different blogs, linking to one another. So it will be similar but not the same thus duplicate contact will have been avoided.

I am the page rank Terminator.

I am the google Robocop.

I am other random sci-fi characters turned into hopefully humorous metaphors of possibly vein attempts to manipulate the search engines.

Pirate Parenting

There was a local city carnival here in Surprise, Arizona; aptly named the Surprise Party, hah hah. I took the kids through one of those climb-around fun houses. Wonderfully enough it was pirate-themed and full of rigging style rope ladders and suspension bridges.

I was so proud of my pirate son, who is almost 4 years old. He maneuvered the fun house like a true buccaneer, moving across the obstacles with no efforts. He'll be raid-ready in no time!

My youngest daughter who is only 2 years old did well until we came to the tall rigging rope ladders, "I too little," she said.

So like any true pirate father I hoisted her to my shoulder and climbed the rigging one handed to the amusement and applause of my littlest pirate princess.

Navigating the shaky suspension bridges with a fidgety unbalanced weight was a little harder. I took the hit and fell to one knee to avoid dropping her, breaking the skin and bruising it slightly (it was a metal suspension bridge).

But we soldiered onward and made it to the three story slide. Of which my pirate lad took a running, head first dive down. He'll be swinging from the yard arm, in the good way, before I know it!

Thinkman - a virtual band created for a soundtrack to a movie that was never made. That alone sounds like a great plot. Add in some quantum physics and super string theory and you've got an alternate realities made-for-Scifi-Channel masterpiece.

But they/he did make some great 80's scifi synth pop.

Thinkman was an electro-pop-rock band of the late 1980s and early 1990s which acted as a vehicle for singer/songwriter/producer Rupert Hine.

Their first appearance was on the soundtrack to Savage Steve Holland's first feature film "Better Off Dead". Thinkman was conceived about a year before as a 'front' for producer Hine following his three A&M solo albums in the first half of the 1980s. The three other band members that appeared with Hine both on their videos and limited live performances were actors. They were- Greg Crutwell (playing drummer Joe McArthur), Andy Baker (bassist Andy Paris), and Julian Clary (keyboardist Leo Hurll). Julian Clary confirms this in his autobiography- "A young man's passage".

Hine and his collaborator, Jeannette-Thérese Obstoj, had originally planned a feature film that coincided with Hine's signing to Island Records. In the original script there were some 40 Thinkman in total, and their role was that of media terrorists. Reportedly the budget spiralled and it was felt prudent to put the movie on hold and start by releasing the 'soundtrack' first. The album was called The Formula and it became one of Hine's best-sellers. Whilst the actors made no appearance on the album, Jamie West-Oram from The Fixx and Stewart Copeland from The Police did. Guest vocals on the title track from one of Hine's favorite artists at the time, Lisa Dalbello, from Canada.

The second album, Life is a Full-Time Occupation, was released two years later. Accompanied by the same actors for both visuals and promotion, the album was a hybrid between the mood of The Formula and a 'dance' energy arrangement. The lyrical content was also split between the 'media-terrorist' songs and something altogether lighter.

The third and final album, Hard Hat Zone, took several further steps away from the origins of the band and became effectively a Rupert Hine solo album. Though one video was made with the same cast, the 'look' no longer worked. Lyrically, the songs were mostly reflective of environmental issues from the title track's reference to the state of the planet to an ode to the plight of the whales entitled "November Whale".

Ink - the movie

This is not a documentary about getting tattoos. Ink is one of the best scifi/fantasy films produced in years. Pan's Labyrinth wishes it was this film.

Heavy filter usage to compensate for digital versus film look, but done well. Most independent films can never get that right. The additional effects looked great and the characters were thoroughly developed and helped drive the story.

The nightmare men, i.e. "bad guys" were of a spectacular, unique design. Their only flaw was that in the film canon they were referred to as incubus, which is a completely inaccurate choice based on actual mythology which destroys the concept (its like calling a Chihuahua a pit bull; both canines, yes, but two completely different animals). And the main baddy at the end was a big wuss, though the finale with its dream fight scene was awesome. Great filmwork and editing. Very tight.

There is nothing independent about this film except for maybe the budget they had to make it. Ink was better than anything that came out of Hollywood this year.

According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, dancing can lower your risk of coronary heart disease and decrease blood pressure.

A recent study from the Lancisi Heart Institute in Ancona, Italy, suggests even more benefits from a whirl or two around the dance floor. Researchers found that men and women with mild to moderate heart failure could boost their bodies’ oxygen use through dancing. Those who participated in an exercise program that included dancing three times a week showed an 18 percent improvement in oxygen use – a sign of better overall heart health.

Unhappy Halloween

Talk about a mixed bag of tricks. This was the best and worst Halloween I've ever had.

We were running wild through the streets, safely looking both ways before crossing, of course. A truly memorable Halloween experience like all children should have. Their plastic jack o'lanterns were filled to overflowing with candy. My oldest daughter, Samantha, was definitely the "winner" of Halloween as none of the other kids in the group, ten plus or so, could keep up with her. She was moving, she was tireless, she was the spirit of Halloween!

Unfortunately, I have shared custody of my children and live on the other side of town. So I only get to see them every other weekend. But I'm saving up my money so that I can get a house back out their way and be with them as much as possible.

Right now I have to take them to their grandparents' or their aunt's house to watch them over the weekend. Samantha, who is only nine, began to cry as we left. I reassured her that I would move back as soon as I could so that they wouldn't be forced to travel all the time.

She said, "No. That's not it. It's that I never get to see mom except sometimes on the weekends. Because she's always going out during the week."

*Samantha's mom has placed her new boyfriend above her children as the highest priority in her life.

*Samantha's mom has left more empty bottles of alcohol around her house in the last five months than in the entire five years she was with me.

*Samantha's mom lies to her children that she will be home to tuck them in and hold them while they fall asleep, instead staying out all night with her friends.

*Samantha's mom lies to me saying she never gets any alone time away from the kids when Samantha tells me that her mother is always gone.

Vampires, werewolves, devils, demons, goblins, monsters, their imaginary terror fades quickly when compared to the very real emotional horrors that are beginning to stalk my nine-year-old daughter's psyche. And I am powerless to stop it.

I cannot grab it, or kill it, or even hold it back and tell her to run away as fast as she can.

I remember seeing the premiere of Star Wars when I was five. I remember all my Halloweens back to when I was three. I remember the names and faces of all my elementary school teachers.

My greatest fear as a father is that my daughter will not look back upon this Halloween evening with a warm glowing fondness of those early childhood memories, but will remember it as the night she realized that her mother did not really love her as much as she said she did.

I'm sorry, Samantha. I'll spend the rest of my life trying to make it better. I promise.

There are NO TEENAGE VAMPIRES going to high school in Boston, the PTA sent home a note reassuring the parents.

A school administrator wants to set the record straight: There are no vampires at Boston Latin.

The headmaster of the prestigious exam school took the unusual step today of sending a notice to faculty, students, and parents saying that "rumors involving 'vampires'" had begun spreading through the building Wednesday, causing disruption and anxiety for a number of students.

Lynne Mooney Teta asked everyone's help in calming the school community down.

"I seek your cooperation in redirecting your energy toward the learning objectives of the day. Please do not sensationalize or discuss these rumors," she said.

She also said she was concerned that some students' safety might be jeopardized because of the rumors, and asked students to report if any student is being harassed.

"At no time was anyone's safety in jeopardy," she said.

A law enforcement official with knowledge of the case said a group of girls at the school had been bullying at least one other student who likes to dress in the style known as "Goth."

The official said the girls began spreading a rumor that the student was a would-be vampire, who had cut someone's neck and sucked the person's blood.

When Boston police went to the school Wednesday for an unrelated matter, that only fueled the rumor as students began speculating that the so-called "vampire" was being arrested.

The headmaster's notice, which was addressed to faculty and students and forwarded to parents, did not say exactly what the rumors were. Teta's office referred questions to a Boston schools spokesman.

Chris Horan, a spokesman for the Boston Public Schools, would not confirm reports of bullying.

"My understanding is [Teta] got reports that the teenage rumor mill ... was getting out of hand and she wanted to help the teachers and students and families put an end to it and get back to the business of teaching and learning," Horan said.

Officer Eddy Chrispin, a Boston police spokesman, said police went to the school Wednesday after hearing that some students were spreading rumors.

"We did go over there and speak to some of the students and quelled the rumors that were going and kind of told them the effect those rumors could have on the rest of the student population," he said.

Teen interest in vampires has surged in recent months with the release of "Twilight,'' the first movie from a popular Stephenie Meyer book series. Last weekend, "Twilight'' sleepover parties were held in many US cities coinciding with the DVD release of the movie, starring teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson.

The prestigious Boston Latin public school was founded in 1635, and its students have included Ben Franklin, Sam Adams, John Hancock, Louis Farrakhan, Sumner Redstone, and Nat Hentoff.

I've always been an enthusiast of symbology but from what I have dredged up online the symbol for chaos is still somewhat below the radar for the collective unconscious. But much like the anarchy symbol 20 years ago which rose from the punk/rebellion set into suburban canon with a fiery cliched oversaturation I'm sure that eventually some pseudo-neo-metal band or Hot Topic tshirt will appear just in time to make chaos cool.

In the meantime you'll have Love & Chaos in the Lower Subgenres.

I did find this awesome modified chaos tattoo. Solid black lines with its warped center almost forming a dark heart in the center. The subliminal messengers from Love & Chaos have infected another innocent soul. Plus, it looks good with a backless evening dress. Wear it well, fuck shit up, chaos! chaos! chaos!

Broken Heart of Glass

I was cleaning out my storage unit yesterday. The dumpster provided on site was overflowing with trash. All around it was broken glass. Lying amidst the debris was a single playing card. I bent down and turned it over. It was the Ace of Hearts.

Talk about the universe hitting me over the head with metaphors.

One of the aspects of the Law of Attraction is that of clearing or cleansing. This is not just of the emotional or spiritual clutter but can be attached to the physical junk in your life, too. Whatever is blocking the flow of energy through you then back into the universe to keep the cycle of your life in motion.

You have to make room in your life for new things to move into it.

I think the beauty of this heart of glass holds more value than any diamond. And so should yours. Protect it, for it is quite fragile. But you can't be afraid to give it away. It will return to you tenfold.

Cotton Candy Clouds

Yesterday I went to the library and checked out a book. There is a great park connected to the library here in Surprise, Arizona. The weather was beautiful, in the 80's in November. Funny enough, to us here in the wasteland at least, the day before that the temperature hit a record high of 96 degrees on November 3rd, 2009.

It was so beautiful that I decided to sit in the grass under a circle of trees and just read. Relax, and read. I realized it has been about 15 years since I've taken the time to slow down and just sit outside and enjoy a good book. Though one could argue that since I tore through the 300 page book in a couple hours that I wasn't slowing down at all, but I'm a strong reader so it doesn't take me much to destroy a text in short order.

I wish I'd had my camera (the pic above is not mine, but the closest I could find to the grand horizon I enjoyed). I need to start carrying it with me. The sun had just set below the mountains and was illuminating the full, billowy clouds with a fiery pink but the tops kept their rich blue hues. It was a fairytale sunset filled with cotton candy clouds.

I just sat there and watched until it faded away into night. I felt so alive, so in touch with existence. It is one of the memories I will carry with me through the rest of my life.

Saw represents the lowest common denominator in horror films, ranking just above cannibal mountain men movies. Jigsaw is a weak character, neither generating love nor hate, but indifference. And the creepy doll mascot is just lame.

They are generating the films as quickly as possible because they realize that as a franchise it has no real staying power. As soon as they stop making the Saw films the franchise will die.

And I can't wait.

What do you get when you cross Saw with Dumb & Dumber? Saw & Sawer, according to the artist, who probably agrees with me on the level of horror that Saw rates.

Ok. I admit, the sexy nurses are nice. But the idea has been done before.

Satan's Little Helper

I was put off renting Satan's Little Helper for weeks due to the incredibly terrible cover and pun-ishing title which just screamed no-budget crap. Finally, after exhausting all other possibilities around the time of its release I gave in to that wicked, leering mask on the cover. And it was worth it--best straight-to-video horror movie in years!!!

Featuring Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction, Prophecy, Battlestar Galactica) and written and directed by Jeff Lieberman, most noted for his cult classic piece Blue Sunshine, this film is solidly put together. The story is told in a logical fashion with the right amount of horror and comedy. The acting is well done and the filmwork itself is beautiful.

The main character of the nine-year-old little boy Dougie is actually the worst part, the character coming off as too lame and whiney. You actually want the kid to get killed by the end of the film.

BACK OF THE BOX:
Halloween will never be the same. Upon meeting a strange masked man 9 year old Dougie lives out the fantasy of his favorite video game Satan's Little Helper. The two embark on a hellish rampage through the suburban community but when the masked killer targets Dougie's family it may be too late to stop him.

Sadly enough, the only trailer I could find online at this time is in Spanish. Ah well, enjoy it anyway.

I bought this film. It was stolen. I will buy it again.

If you Google love and hit the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button it simply takes you to the wikipedia entry for love: any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection and attachment.

They say there are 63,507,075 images of love in the Yahoo search database, but you can only see the first 1000. So there are limits to love.

I wanted to see what the last picture of love was, to jump to the end of the internet and find love waiting there. But alas, I can't crack the code to alter URLs so that I might be able to do so.

The picture at the top of this article is the end-all be-all (read:last) picture of love according to Yahoo. And apparently that is a love of vandalism. Nothing shows her how much she means to you like petty crime.

Most Pirates In One Place - New World Record for America!

The city of Portland and the 2009 Portland Pirate Festival made their way into the Guinness Book of World Records today, 9/20/2009, for the “Most Pirates in One Place”, with an official count of 1,651. Those numbers topped the previous world record holders of Brixham, England, who numbered a mere 1,469 back in May.

In order to be counted, each “pirate” had to be in possession of a sword (play or not), an eye patch and a bandanna on their head. Additionally, anyone 13 years old and under needed their parent’s approval by way of a release, they must be old enough to sign the official book and all entrants must remain within the group confines for an additional fifteen minutes after the count.

I am proud to say that we obeyed each and every rule (pretty out-of-the-ordinary for a bunch of cut-throat pirates!) and came out on the other side, now holding a world’s record.

The 4th Annual Portland Pirate Festival opened the gates at 10am, Saturday, September 19th and ran through the weekend. The event was held underneath the gorgeous St Johns Bridge at Cathedral Park, North Edison Street and Pittsburgh Avenue.

Mouth-watering eatables, live music on 2 stages, games and puppet shows for the kids, and other swash buckling merriment came together in one place, pulling off a wonderful family event. I have never before seen so many pirates in one place and it was almost like being a kid again, amongst thousands of other kids. There were 3 huge inflatable rides for all the little buccaneers and all sorts of games to keep them entertained, including sword fighting lessons.

Aside from the obvious thrill of setting the world’s record, the highlight for me was the live music on Sunday at the Quarterdeck stage. The B.O.O.M. Pirate’s Band and Captain Bogg and Salty really made my day. With a combo of exceptionally well-done pirate music and lots of humor, the 2 bands kept the crowds mesmerized. I recommend picking up both of their CDs…very enjoyable stuff.

There was so much to do at the 2009 Portland Pirate Festival that I simply do not have the room to talk about it all. Romeo Void - Never Say Never

Great, descriptive band name with an unfortunately fairly overlooked song from 1982. With a super tagline chorus of "I might like you better if we slept together" being the perfect anthem for the decade of excess you'd think it would have been much more well received MTV sure dropped the ball on that one, back when they used to play music. Or at least it could have become a retro hit, despite VH1's best efforts.

The lead singer, Debora Iyall, had a sensuous voice which pushed the song over the top. It gave the image of a naughty blond hottie in a slinky black dress and ray-bans enticing the listener. Sadly though I believe it was because she was a bigger girl, and the farthest thing from the image summoned up by the song and voice; that was the real reason for the band falling just short of the fame they deserved.

The band Julien-K, a side project from members of Orgy, did a cover of the song, retitled slightly to Nvr Say Nvr. Pretty color-by-number industrial pop version, IMO. But the original had a very distinct kick to it that most bands might not be able to add a unique twist to it that would surpass the original.

But our Law of Attraction lesson for the day is contained in the song's lyrics:

Zombieland

Great film, especially if you're a zombie fan!

One of the new subgenres which was destined to emerge for buzz word worthiness--zomedy; a contraction of zombie comedy.

The filmwork itself is very well done and its visual style is reminiscent of Sean of the Dead. That is exactly what this film is going for; which is a good thing in this case because it is very cleverly written, even though the whole "rules of a zombie apocalypse" idea is rather worn.

It's better than anything George Romero has done in 30 years.

I won't throw in any spoilers, but the one standout scene (which also has a clip that plays after the credits run) is the funniest I've seen in years; you will recognize it when it begins. Over-the-top self-referential but none-the-less hilarious! Even if I could have used more totally-awesomely-funnily-hyphenated-descriptions.

Romance & Cigarettes, sounds like something made for the maniacal here at Love & Chaos; and you'd be right in thinking so. A better title could have been A Stereotypical Life in Jersey. Ya know, I grew up in suburbia, but I can't imagine the neighborhood naissance (or lack there of by way of association) that is portrayed as the regular middle class white trash hell of east coast American suburbs.

If you're easily put off by obscenities or sexual content, that which real life is actually based on, you might be a bit uneasy watching this film. The dialogue is straight up east coast stereotype.

Beyond that, it is a great musical romedy (romantic comedy) with a healthy dose of chaos thrown in there. Christopher Walken's character steals the film. And Susan Sarandon's chase/fight scene in the women's sexy underwear store was great!

John Turturro wrote and directed a great piece of celluloid. It features an ensemble cast including James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Mary Louise Parker, Mandy Moore, Kate Winslet, Steve Buscemi, Eddie Izzard, and the ineffable Christopher Walken.

Let me reiterate, it is full of musical pieces. Great classic stuff! The preview does it no justice.

And for those ladies who are self-conscious about their weight or body type, Kate Winslet is someone you should admire and emulate. She is not a petite and delicate flower, she is a real woman. She is curvaceous, she is vivacious, she is delicious!

Disney's First Princess Remembers Becoming Snow White

A graceful young girl twirls across the screen, and movie magic is born. The girl on the screen is Snow White, and the movie in which she appears, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" will make screen history – Disney's first full-length animated feature, a box-office phenomenon, and proof that animation could also be great art.

But behind the fictional dancing princess was a very real girl. Marge Champion was only 13 when she was interviewed to become the live-action model for Disney's first Princess, dancing and acting on film so that the animators could study her movements and make Snow White seem as real as possible on-screen. Now, with "Snow White and Seven Dwarfs" being re-released in a restored Diamond Edition — available today on Disney DVD and October 6, 2009, on Disney Blu-ray, we sat down and spoke with Marge Champion about modeling Snow White, working with Walt Disney, and coming of age at the Walt Disney Studios.

In her own words, what she told us: "My father was Ernest Belcher, the dean of the West Coast dancing masters. A representative of Disney came to my father's dance school and picked three of us out of the class to go to the Disney Studio to be interviewed. I was 13 when they interviewed me, and at the end of junior high school. I didn't hear from them all summer and I had totally forgotten about the interview – then suddenly, in September, when I was 14, I got a call asking me to come to the Studio, because they wanted to fit me into a mock-up of the Snow White costume. I had started high school, so being able to get out a day or two every month and go over to Disney was really a hoot!

"Because cartoon characters have a large head in proportion to their bodies, they had this football helmet with a couple of holes punctured into it and her black hair painted on it for me to wear. By noon, I was practically fainting under those lights with this helmet on and it also inhibited my movement a great deal. So they finally took that off and just put a ribbon around my hair.

"They took motion pictures of me and showed me the sections I was going to do. I continued for over a year and a half, going to the Studio a couple of days a month and working on 'Snow White.' By the time I was 15, they were nearly through. We had Louis Hightower as the Prince, we had Paul Godkin as the Wicked Witch, and a lot of dancers, because only dancers with proper training could really move correctly. They even put me in a big floppy coat, and I did a bunch of stuff for Dopey.

"Everybody thought [the idea of a full-length animated movie] was crazy! But they were in love with it, and so was I -- I was brought up on 'Three Little Pigs' and Mickey Mouse. We just had no idea the success that 'Snow White' would have.

"I went on and did the Blue Fairy in 'Pinocchio' and the hippopotamus in 'Fantasia's Dance of the Hours.' That was a whole different job -- really I was doing the choreography, because they had other models more appropriately sized to actually portray the hippo.

"I can see all of my movements in the character of Snow White! That was the way I moved and the way I danced. The interesting part is, when they first showed me the storyboards, Snow White looked a little more like Betty Boop – little tiny waist and big round eyes with eyelashes. And, by the time they started drawing me, the eyes had become almond-shaped. The hair was not my color, because I was sort of ash-blonde – but everything else, the nose and particularly the waistline, is like me. She was a much more real human character when they finished than she was originally imagined.

"Walt Disney saw me a great deal, and he was very protective of me – I called him Uncle Walt. His daughter Diane had studied for two months with my father. He was a very proper gentleman. I don't remember him coming down to the set very much – I think he viewed all the film, every single day, and would make suggestions to the directors.

"My father let me work for Disney because it was a very safe place for me in show business. I got a little Model A Ford by the time I was 15 because you could get a license then if you had been taught to drive. It only went 40 miles an hour, but at least he didn't have to drive me out to the Hyperion Studios every time they wanted me.

"I think working with Disney gave me a great deal of self-confidence that I probably would not have had. I went to New York when I was 18. It helped me not to feel embarrassed if I was asked to do something eccentric or rather over the top.

"I'm still in touch with the people who are left – there aren't many. It's been an extraordinary event in my life, being in movies and television and all the things that I've done, and it really all stemmed out of my beginnings and training at Disney Studios."

I remember back when Tower Records rented movies. You could get tons of live underground punk shows, all the different Star Trek and Batman pornos, and true indie film classics like Dogs In Space.

I and my hot goth girlfriend at the time used to always make the journey into the dirty heart of the city to rent unique cinema fare. Once we saw the cover box but no tape case behind it we called the store every day and inquired upon its status until the movie was returned. Definitely worth the wait and harassment.

One of those captured moments of a bygone era in music history and youth culture.

With virtually no plot, Dogs in Space is a stylish and chaotic film about a group of alternative music fans sharing a house in the inner Melbourne suburb of Richmond. The plotless and artistic style of the film is a legacy of Lowenstein's background in advertising and music video production; before Dogs in Space he had served as director for a series of promotional clips for songs from the INXS album The Swing.

The script was developed from Lowenstein's own experiences and the central character Sam is based on Sam Sejavka from the band The Ears, with whom Lowenstein lived in the 1970s. Chuck Meo, who plays a drummer in the movie, also lived with the pair. The house, in Berry Street, was the same house Lowenstein and Sejavka shared and was rented from its new owners and modified at considerable expense for the film. Lowenstein wrote himself out of the film and several of his exploits were attributed to the character Tim (Nique Needles). Sejavka has a brief cameo in a party scene as a character called Michael. In the film, Sam and Tim are the key members of a band called Dogs in Space and share their house with various social misfits including Sam's girlfriend Anna (Saskia Post), a university student called Luchio (Tony Helou) and a transient and apparently nameless teenager known only as The Girl (Deanna Bond), a character based extremely closely on Sara, who for a period lived with Lowenstein at Berry Street.

The film's minimalist plot traces the day-to-day existence of the chief characters, particularly the relationship between Sam and Anna, and is virtually an endless sequence of intense party scenes involving heavy substance-abuse. In between, there are trips to Ballarat (at the time, the closest town to Melbourne with a 24-hour convenience store) and humorous encounters with an aggressive neighbour (Joe Camilleri) and one character's fast-talking, chainsaw-wielding uncle (Chris Haywood), who simply turns up one afternoon with his family (the baby in this scene is Lowenstein's niece Robyn). There is also a minor sub-plot in which the characters try unsuccessfully to pass off some rubbish burned in an oven as a piece of Skylab to a local radio station. In the end, the group's dysfunctional and hedonistic lifestyle claims a victim when Anna dies from a heroin overdose.

The movie was released on DVD for a short time, but in the Australian market. So no US region discs exist officially. But you can still pick up a used VHS copy assuming you still have a VCR.

This last quote is very prophetic for me. One of the most vivid dreams I have ever had I am sitting atop a hill with a lush green field rolling beneath me, a copse of trees in the distance. At the bottom are three children running and playing with a dog. There is a woman sitting beside me but I could never see her face.

I had this dream when I was 17. I now have three children. There's a pic of Pancho the Pekingese above. I just need to find that unseen beauty beside me from my dream and climb that hill.

I will reach that summit one day, I will.

Mystery Machine!

Zoinks! It's the Mystery Machine! They had a medium-sized stuffed Scooby Doo in the driver's seat, but no actual big costumed Scooby anywhere. But the multitude of characters come out in waves so it was probably the same five people hired to dress up who would change into a differect character every 20 minutes or so. This was at the Kids Expo here in Glendale, Arizona last weekend.

My son had to sneak under the partition and *actually touch* the Mystery Machine. How could I get mad at that.

There was one scruffy-looking guy with a goatee who I thought was an actor playing Shaggy until I realized he was just a regular slacker getting his picture taken in front of the Mystery Machine. Jinkies!

Here's the techno remix track featuring samples from the show, taken from Scooby Doo's Snack Tracks: The Ultimate Collection. It's a compilation of the various opening theme songs used throughout the years, a few other musical numbers from Shaggy and Scooby, as well as the other great musical pieces from the early shows, including "I Can Make You Happy" by Davy Jones of The Monkees and "Pretty Mary Sunlite" by Jerry Reed. I own this and it is a great CD! I went out and bought it on the first day it was released. Now that my kids have gained the same love of Scooby Doo as their father, the disc is getting pretty beat up. I'll probably have to buy a new one soon.

Too bad the person who put this video together had to use clips from quite possibly the worst Scooby Doo movie ever, Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School. The level of the artwork was subpar. The plot was mediocre but the puns were so bad it makes it nearly unwatchable. There's some other red van instead of the mystery machine and Shaggy is wearing a red shirt instead of his traditional green one. Plus, Scrappy's in it, so there's one more mark against it.

Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter

BACK-O-THE-BOX:
The second coming is upon us, and Jesus has returned to Earth. But before he can get down to the serious business of judging the living and the dead, he has to contend with an army of vampires that can walk in the daylight. Combining Kung-fu action with Biblical prophecy and a liberal dose of humor, the film teams the Savior with Mexican wrestling hero El Santos against mythological horrors and science gone mad and also manages to address contemporary sexual politics. And did we mention that it's a musical? This sure ain't Sunday school.

I really enjoyed this film. Yes, it's no-budget. Yes, the acting is (purposely) over the top. Yes, the fight scenes are awkwardly bad like when you used to play ninja fight as a kid. Oh, and if you're overly religious, yes, it could be considered sacrilegist.

But it's an incredibly funny movie, the script was pretty well thought out, the storyboarding/shot blocking was very well done (many no-budgets use single, long shots with no pickup shots or additional angles) which shows the extra work involved and the attention to detail necessary to do so, and the music, including the score, selected punk tunes, and the in-film broadway number parodying Jesus Christ Superstar, was awesome!

There are so many classic comedy bits that I won't give any spoilers, but the bar fight was great!

If you love schlock indie films along the lines of Troma then I definitely recommend Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter!

This movie looks pretty cheesy, but may turn out to be alright. Here's the trailer for Transylmania.

But it's the promotional posters, which look better than the trailer, that I'd rather have. Check 'em out. I put them here for posterity since I could only find them posted on a single horror film site and then they were just thumbnail slideshowed; an unworthy presentation for vampire bat bikini bottoms! Zowee!

It is a great parody site of your standard college websites, but for actual film information it was very poor. And this is the only film listed on the production company's website, which just linked back to this site; though the people listed online have an impressive career history in the industry. Blood Makes Noise, a great song from alternababe Suzanne Vega; almost a sort of industrial pop. You can check out the original video *here* Embedding has been disabled by Universal Music Group--FUCK THEM! But it is a great video that fits well with the music.

But the above video featuring the current Dr. Who done by kheldara is a perfect substitution; especially welcome here at the Love & Chaos. British scifi featuring 90's altrock could definitely be classified as a lower subgenre.

Though my heart still lies with Tom Baker, David Tennant is a close second.

The Treats Truck comes to you!

They call this piece a "Visa GoBiz Webumentary" and of course it is technically an advertisement for Visa business services. But it is put together beautifully. It seemed too perfect. The editing was great, with the music and dialogue making it that awesome little piece of indie filming. I actually shed a tear to see that someone besides Walmart was succeeding in America. I couldn't believe it was real.

So I investigated further, and it is Kim Ima's small business dream-come-true-on-wheels. I salute her ingenuity (commercial space and rent must be a nightmare in NYC anyway!) and her bravery. Running your own business, especially starting from scratch, both literally and pun-intended, is an incredible undertaking.

I ran across a flu virus prevention PSA and it just fit perfectly with a ZOMBIE INFECTION! A quick editing of PSA, actual news footage from the hacked construction sign warning of a zombie invasion, a well done Emergency Broadcast System zombie alert, and some clips from a zombie walk (a gathering of people dressed as zombies who mill around, the better organized ones have designated "victims" for the zombies to attack and cover in blood).

How do you fend off a zombie infection?

1. Wash your hands - don't touch the bodies, they're infected!
2. Cover your mouth - breathing in noxious fumes or "accidentally" swallowing infected zombie blood is bad, bad, bad.
3. Keep your distance - stay away from zombies in general, but especially when they are horded together into larger groups.
4. Separate your sick - quarantining is suggested, but since we all know its only a matter of time before they change over into the living dead you should just make your peace with it and kill the infected.
5. Dispose of your waste - get rid of the bodies. No! not because its evidence, but because they are still infectious.

Separate Your Sick should be a band name.

I'm staying with family right now. They live in one of those gated retirement communities. Tonight was a perfect Arizona night. The kind that tricks people into moving here.

I went and worked out a bit at the weight room, took a dip in the pool, relaxed in the jacuzzi, then went exploring the neighborhoods in their electric golf cart. The weather is truly beautiful here when the sun goes down. Not too warm, not to cool. A good breeze from zipping around.

Drove out across the golf course, smelling the fresh air from all the trees and grass, chasing rabbits in the dark, until I was forced to turn around by the super sprinklers. Don't wanna get slammed by one of those suckers!

Are you the One, Neo?

That's the popular stereotype that comes to mind for most of the scifi, or atleast Matrix-educated of the lovers of the subgenres.

And isn't that what we're seeking in companionship, not just a lover of the subgenres, but a subgenre lover? That special person who has the same passions and affinities. The One.

Though the cyber-industrial post apoc look is drop dead sexy, there is another One which cannot be ignored. The White Zombie, Escape From LA One. Now she would make me feel the love and chaos in my lower subgenres.

Once I get right with myself (the inner One), only then will I be able to manifest the Law of Attraction to bring her (the outer One) into my life; thus bringing Yin and Yang into harmonious alignment.

Harmony? In my life? Wow. Now that would take a universal power to achieve.

I actually enjoyed the sequel to Escape From New York. I may be one of the few who actually did, but I was just glad to see Snake back in action. Who knows, maybe we'll see Escape from Las Vegas some day.

Bob Proctor: Law of Attraction self help guru. The guy is a great speaker. I love just listening to him talk. Which is the sign of a good salesman. It's up to you if he's selling snake oil or selling salvation. I'm down with most of his messages, but the Science of Getting Rich comes across as more of a sales pitch, something he put out with his guru gang buddies, basically repackaging the old stuff, so he could keep the machine rolling without actually putting in the work.

This is my version of Bob Proctor and the SGR Experience as it collides with the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Simple, thick, catchy chords. Blues rhythm and hooks. Screaming glam metal guitar solos.
Throw in lyrics about sex, partying, and all other debaucheries and you have sleaze rock.

We give you some pinnacle examples of music, and musicians, who would be right at home in the grindhouse theaters and their underground exploitation films; of which, many of the sleaze rocker song lyrics have included or been inspired by.

From out of the 70's, still going strong today, and perhaps the godfathers and inspirators of the entire subgenre, I give you Motorhead!

Moving to the 80's and a lesser known band, much love for Zodiac Mindwarp.

With additional roots in the 70's space rock subgenre, the 90's saw a rise to power from Monster Magnet.

Though his musical career began during the mid 80's with his band White Zombie, Rob Zombie's music continues into this new millennium and carries all the endearing qualities of the master sleaze rocker he has become. Going so far as to making his own grindhouse inspired films which have brought him renown in the cinematic world as well. He also contributed a fake movie trailer clip, She Wolves of the SS, for Quentin Tarrantino's poor attempt to recreate (read:steal) the old 70's exploitation films in the aptly titled Grindhouse. Scum of the Earth, come on!

Poor grammar is usually the first clue that the profile is a fake, usually being implemented by some scammer whose first language is obviously not English. Granted, it could just be a dumb chick, but most of the time the structuring is reversed, words are used completely wrong, and misspellings are atrocious. Scammer grammar is a dead giveaway!

Here is the personal ad word for misused word:

Both my son and my nephew have Batman tshirts with the little velcro strips on the shoulders. I'm pretty sure its to attach a nifty Batman cape to it.

I don't know if they are sold seperately or their mothers got the shirts as hand-me-downs or from the Salvation Army or something, but I've never seen either of them with a cape.

A Pirate's Life For Me

Honest confession: I have been a pirate my entire life. No bandwagon hopping, sudden shipboarding newcomer, I.

Peter Pan is the second earliest film in my memory. I was 4 years old during its theatrical re-release in 1976 (Snow White re-released a year early being my very first film memory).

And I've been down with Errol Flynn's Captain Blood from around the same time when a Saturday afternoon tv viewing pressed me into a life of piracy. Flynn was the penultimate action star.

And since we are fast approaching the international Talk Like A Pirate Day of September 19th, I thought I would recommend another epic pirate tale: Cutthroat Island starring Geena Davis and Matthew Modine.

Back during its release in 1995 Cutthroat Island was mostly panned by critics and did not fair well monetarily at the box office. But it did come with a big price tag at that time, failing to be the summer blockbuster the studio had hoped. I may still have both the Jolly Roger silver skull and cross-swords preview poster as well as the original theatrical release poster floating about in cardboard poster tubes in storage somewhere. There were a few perks to working at a movie theater.

I love Johnny Depp and the new Pirates of the Caribbean films. It would be great to see him go up against a strong female pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean 4 like Geena Davis' character in Cutthroat Island; especially since Keira Knightley has chosen not to return for the 4th installment.

I can only hope my own daughters grow up to be pirates like her.

Behind the Mask - The Rise of Leslie Vernon

I thought the killer's mask was kind of cheesy, which put me off at first from the cover box. But this is an incredible movie! Very well done. Towards the end I also found myself wondering about the technical aspects of it (what kind of cameras, etc) since it was done so professionally for a straight-to-video.

Once you get past that the main killer seems to be channelling Dane Cook, it's a very funny film.

One of the best horror comedies in years. I need to pick up a copy.

Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell

For this film, Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell, the title does NOT say it all. The titulary soiree is actually only a 30 second clip, and one of the plot fails of the story. Its only used as a clever title to draw in viewers. The only nudity (in a National Lampoon film of all things!) was stock footage.

Let me preface this review by saying that I love the post apoc subgenre. My favorite film of all time is Road Warrior. This film started out with a fair idea but suffered from incredibly bad writing.

The Yurick/Satan story thread as well as the blind albino psychic future King of America thread were pretty pathetic and should have been downplayed or removed completely. They could have still left the political threads for a perfectly decent workaround.

Due to the terrible writing it was difficult to watch the entire film, but I soldiered on. After all, my love for the lower subgenres has seen me through many a black night.

The few animated transition clips were great quality, used in a Natural Born Killers fashion.

But it was the characters of Tex Kennedy, his robot guardians Quincy and Yul, and his new girlfriend Cannibal Sue, which kept me watching. Or more so, the very well done acting by this group. They lent a believability to their characters, despite the poor scripting, and I could see these fine young actors continuing on to brighter careers.

Get some good writers in there and the Tex and Sue characters could carry the franchise.

The film had that 80’s washed out post apoc look which is one of the genre trademarks. We will assume this was done on purpose as opposed to just being badly filmed like so many of said predecessor films.

And Daniel Baldwin has a cameo as the self-proclaimed King of America; if that tells you anything.

Inspiration can come from anywhere. I was skimming through some of the online dating sites and came across one profile which just screamed out. She seemed pretty cool, but on the surface was just a vegan raver chick going through her midlife crisis.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with discovering, or rediscovering, who you are; or who you've always been but denied or suppressed it for most of your entire adult life.

But she wrote beautifully.

Her words generated an instant attraction. But I had no pic on my profile (left intentionally blank since I'm in no position to seem appealing at this moment in time and I'm not posting a fuzzy webcam pic) so I didn't even receive a response on if the words were hers or just a clever plagiarization; and there were no results from a quick googlization.

But the words that moved me so:
